HIV Outcomes contributes to shaping the Global AIDS Strategy 2026-2031
HIV Outcomes contributed to the development of the Global AIDS Strategy 2026–2031 through a dedicated focus group discussion with UNAIDS. The Strategy aims to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, while ensuring a sustainable response beyond that milestone. HIV Outcomes provided targeted recommendations to better address the complex and evolving needs of people living and ageing with HIV, reinforcing the call for a truly person-centred approach.
The forthcoming Global AIDS Strategy 2026–2031 marks a renewed commitment to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, while laying the foundation for a sustainable and long-term HIV response. Led by UNAIDS, the development of the Strategy is grounded in inclusive consultation and evidence-based analysis, engaging people living with HIV, communities, civil society, scientists, governments and other key partners.
As part of this inclusive process, HIV Outcomes contributed to a dedicated focus group discussion organised by UNAIDS. The discussion centred on how the new Strategy could better reflect the evolving needs of people living and ageing with HIV, many of whom face a complex mix of physical, mental and social health challenges that require long-term care.
Drawing on the expertise of its members’ contributions during the consultation, HIV Outcomes shared several key recommendations, including:
- Integrating healthcare services to prevent, treat, and manage comorbidities, including mental health
- Monitoring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and enabling meaningful community feedback on care quality
- Establishing National Action Plans with sustainable funding for community-led services
- Tackling stigma and discrimination, especially in healthcare settings
- Ensuring a gender- and age-sensitive HIV response.
These priorities reflect the urgent need for a person-centred approach that supports long, healthy, and dignified lives for all people living with HIV.
HIV Outcomes remains committed to supporting forward-looking strategies that place the lived experience of people with HIV at the heart of EU policymaking.
